Social Movements in Context Project
Inspiring Black Voices in History
Jebby Holt
My art piece is a collage featuring Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Angela Davis, Tupac, Maya Angelou, and Barack Obama. The medium that I used is pencil. I was inspired to create this collage because everybody in it is somebody who I look up to or that inspires me. I was also inspired from what we learned this year regarding civil rights, social change and different strategies that were used. There were times throughout this project where I struggled a lot, especially over winter break where I had an art block, no motivation and didn’t work on my project at all. In order to overcome these challenges I focused all of my energy and attention on the project and tried to get as much done as possible with the time given. The main point that I am trying to portray with this art piece is that that there is not just one path to sparking social change, whether it's Martin Luther King giving a speech to thousands of people in a crowd or putting pencil to paper like Angela Davis they both helped the civil rights movement gain traction and popularity. I feel as though if I were to redo this project I would have put more time and effort into my piece just so I could have a little bit more pride in my work as well as have a more complete project.
